2012 - End of Year Event Calendar

May Activity Calendar

With the end of the year approaching, it is a busy time here at the high school.  The students are hard at work preparing for Advanced Placement testing and final exams.  It remains important for students to continue to work hard right up to the end of school to prepare for these tests.  In addition, a student can jeopardize their ability to gain credit in a course if they have poor attendance and/or a class cut.  It is important that students continue to work hard and show good judgment.

This year we will be returning to a half day schedule for final exams.  This will ensure a secure testing environment for all students.  While we will have a supervised area in school for students who will not be testing, students without an exam may be dismissed provided they have transportation.  The exam schedule is noted below

East Windsor Students to Participate in Close Up

Later this May, a delegation of East Windsor students will travel to Washington, DC to participate in the premier experience in government and student leadership. The Close Up program h1as been running for 40 years and East Windsor has been participating annually for over 20 years. This year, Alexandra George, Rebecca George, Ashley Aldrich, Tim Sauerhoefer and Ryan Bagdikian will make up our delegation. They will leave on May 20th and start work right away.

Each day is a highly planned and academically challenging experience designed to deepen students understanding of government and governance. After their orientation to the program they will visit the seats of government, the various agencies that administer government and participate in seminars. Student activities  will include cooperative activities and museum visits. One of the high points of the week is the Day on the Hill, where our group will tour the Capitol and meet with our congressional delegation.

The last day of the week is a student designed day where they will have the opportunity to follow their interests in capitol area. Some students will choose to tour the monuments, make extended tours of the museums or spend time in the Library of Congress.
This trip is made possible by the generous donations from the Board of Education, the East Windsor Education Association, the Lions Club, East Windsor Democratic and Republican town committees, Geisslers Supermarkets and the Rotary Club.

When the group returns, they will share their experiences with other students and speak at meetings of the donor groups. The completion of the full program also allows students to earn .5 credits in an independent study. Many students have already expressed an interest in next year's trip. See Mr. Masters or your guidance counselor for more details.

A few details as the Class of 2012 counts down their final days at East Windsor High School:  In order to participate in senior activities, past financial obligations must be paid in full by Friday, May 25, 2012.  A final senior obligation due date for books, locks or any other financial obligation is Friday, June 15, 2012 for any obligations incurred after May 25, 2012.  After May 25, 2012, personal checks will not be accepted. Payments must be made through certified bank check, money order, or cash.
The Class of 2012 will graduate on June 22, 2012 at La Renaissance in East Windsor.  This is a ticketed entry event.  Each senior will receive ten tickets for the graduation ceremony and students may share with other seniors if they will not sue their total allotment of tickets.  Please see the attached list of events taking place at the high school as we approach year end.

2012 Summer Reading

This summer, East Windsor High School students will be participating in the 2nd year of a new approach to our summer reading program.  Once again, reading selections are recommended for each grade.  What is different is that these titles will have a thematic concept in common, such as peer pressure.  This plan will also allow for students to choose other books (not on the list) that connect to their grade-related themes.  Upon returning to school, students will take part in follow-up activities that will connect those themes, their related reading choices, and their personal life experiences.  (In addition, students in honors English classes will be required to read specific titles.)  Before we break for the summer, the recommended reading lists will be publicized and shared with all students and staff, and limited copies will be made available in the school’s library media center.  In addition, these general guidelines and the lists will be posted on the high school link at the East Windsor Public Schools website.  It is hoped and anticipated that these changes will be more appealing to the students.  After all, reading plays many roles in our lives, and like most things, the more we do it, the better we get at it.

Nook Ebook Reader Winner

The winner of the library media center’s free drawing for a Barnes and Noble Simple Touch ebook reader is Jacob Morin.  To enter, students simply had to check out a book from the LMC during the month of April.  Congratulations to Jake.

East Windsor Students Participate in CABE “Day on the Hill” Rally for Education

5On March 14th, the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education held their annual meeting to review the legislature’s agenda. The primary focus of this year’s meeting was Governor Malloy’s education reform proposals. CABE invites legislators, school leaders, Board of Education members and students to this important meeting to share its positions and proposals and to solicit input from these parties.

The East Windsor delegation included Allison Rodrigue, Amanda Francis, Ayesha Ejaz, Gala Harriman, Meggan Jones, Ryan Bagdikian, Sonny Chaleunphone, Zeisha Diaz and Samantha Sargent. These student leaders participated in the informational meetings and the discussions that followed. The keynote speaker was Governor Malloy and he laid out, in clear terms, his vision for reforming public education in Connecticut and made the argument that there is no time to waste. East Windsor also participated in the march to the legislature and the rally to support public education. While at the rally, we were addressed by Congressman Larson.

In keeping with the goals and purpose of the day, students proceeded to a tour of the Capitol, but not before meeting with Representative Murphy in the Legislative Office Building lobby. During the tour, our group was seated in the House of Representatives and some students took the time to sit in the Lieutenant Governor’s seat in the Senate. That seat, carved from the original Charter Oak, is called the “wishing seat”, a few students even made a wish.

Before returning to school, the students had lunch in the Legislative Office Building cafeteria where they had the opportunity to rub elbows with legislative aides and lobbyists. Our students came away with a better understanding of the larger issues facing public education in Connecticut and a more nuanced understanding of the problems facing other school districts as well.

We will be attending again next year, so if you are interested in becoming more politically active or just want to have a better understanding of the plans for reform and improvement, see Mr. Masters to put your name on the list for next year’s meeting.

Boys Track off to Solid Start
By Coach Ward

The East Windsor Boys Track team is off and running. They have won 60% of their meets and have seen many athletes qualify for the conference and state championships. With four tri-meets and two invitationals forthcoming, the Panthers have a chance to improve on what is already an impressive resume.
Highlights of the early part of the season include defeating a Somers team by 24 points. Last year, the meet came down to the last event with East prevailing by 3 points. Senior experience and leadership usually sets the tone and this year is no different. Rick Reilly has qualified for the state meet in the shot put and is setting his sights on qualifying in the discus and javelin as well. Matt Graham has qualified in the pole vault, and the high jump, long jump and triple jump are all possibilities as well. Jeff LaRochelle and Caleb Harris are on the brink of qualifying in the pole vault and discus respectively. Bill Kehoe, Luis Gomba, Shaun Jones-McCarthy and Patrick O’Konis are also showing growth as they look to stretch their last season into the month of June.
While the seniors are doing their job, the future looks very bright, with 42 underclassmen. The distance team is the largest it has been in over 10 years. Numerous athletes are putting their name (and time or distance) among the all-time greatest marks.
As the calendar turns to May the pressure intensifies and the expectations rise. The boys track team is looking to meet those lofty goals as they head towards the championship part of the schedule.

From the Health Office

Connecticut State Law requires periodic physical examinations of students attending Connecticut schools.  Per the East Windsor Board of Education all 10th grade students are required to provide proof of examination.  An explanatory letter will be mailed by June.  Forms should be returned to the high school nurse as soon as the physical examination has been completed.

Student’s wishing to participate in school athletics must have a current physical.  Physical examination clearance must be completed every 13 months.  Physical examination forms are available in the Health Office, the High School Main Office and in the Athletic Handbook on line.

Mathletes of the Month

The Math Department is proud to announce our Mathletes for the month of April. These students have shown consistently fabulous performance, or may have demonstrated recent improvement and/or newfound dedication toward the goal of learning mathematics. Mr. Pastick chose Michael Long for two months in a row. Mr. Nahas nominated Meghan Harrington and Rachel Martin. Mr. Maltese selected Danielle Sassi for the second month in a row. Mrs. Wilson picked Clay Harmon and Marissa Simonelli.  Mrs. Malin chose Felicia Carryl. Mrs. Goodall nominated Allison Griswold. The Math Department would like to give a shout out to four freshman students that did an outstanding job on the Mathematics section of the Pre-CAPT assessment. Congratulations go out to Daniel Blais, David Dougherty, Shea Gelsomino, and Bradley Gibson. Keep up the good work.

SAT Math Practice
Answer for March Problem

In the figure below, AD = 4, AB = 3 and CD = 9. What is the area of triangle AEC?

14

A. 18
B. 13.5
C. 9
D. 4.5
E. 3

The answer is D. Triangle ABE and triangle DCE are similar triangles. They both have a 90 degree angle and angle E has the same measure in both triangles. Using this information, one can label side AE as x and DE as 4 – x because those two sides add up to 4. Sides AB and CD are corresponding sides in the similar triangles. Therefore, one can set up a proportion to solve for small: large triangles.  15
                                                16
Add 3x to both sides of the equation and
                                                12         =   12x   so x = 1, the side AE of the small triangle
which leaves 3 for side DE.
The height of triangle AEC is 9 which is outside of the triangle and the base is 1. Sub into (base * height)/2 which gives the area of 4.5. The correct answer was letter D.

Miss Boiczyk

The art students here at EWHS are learning and continuing to create fantastic artwork!  The Ceramics II students have been working very hard, applying advanced ceramics techniques to create all types of artwork.  They are learning on how throw pottery on the potter’s wheel, and are learning about symbolism and personal expression.  They are creating a “Story Pot” that is a three dimensional illustration either a personal story, or a children’s story (from a book).  They are also working on developing Themes and figuring out how to express chosen themes in their artwork.  These advanced projects require a great deal of thought, creativity, and technical acuity- all of which takes time.  Please look in the display case for recent works and attend the Spring Art show for more- as they are currently works in progress!

The Drawing students just completed a unit on “Industrial Objects” where they took something ordinary- such as pipes, tools, engines- and made it extraordinary through their use of color, view, and composition. They worked in chalk pastel for this project in a larger format.  Their work is excellent!

The Advanced Art students continue their artistic expression through a variety of chosen avenues, themes, concepts and media.  Some students are painting, some are drawing and even some are working three dimensionally!  You can see their efforts through their work!

I would like to congratulate the following students whose artwork has been chosen to be displayed at the state capitol for the annual “Art at the Capitol” exhibit.  Freshmen Tucker Rajala and Ashley Paleski; sophomores Nicole Elliott and Alyssa Ryan; juniors Rachel Martin and Amarah Veilleux; and seniors Carleigh Proctor and Marvin Barnes.  Their work will be on display through the month of May in the concourse at the state legislative office building in Hartford.  Stop by to see their impressive works AND to view the artworks of other students from schools in the state!

Another special congratulations to Aubri Kozuch who was chosen as this years recipient of the CT Association of Schools Outstanding Artist.  She attending a special banquet at the Aqua Turf and received an award in her honor.  This prestigious award recognizes artists from every high school in the state of CT for their excellence in visual arts!  What an amazing and deserving honor!

Lastly, this year’s end of the year Art Show will be held at the Warehouse Point Library from June 1st for about 2 weeks!  This show is expected to be quite extensive and will showcase and recognize the amazing talent and creativity that exists here at the high school!  It is my hopes that artwork from both the Middle School and Broadbrook Elementary will also be on display!  PLEASE check it out- and check out some books while you’re at it!
